Dermatology is the branch of medicine that primarily focuses on skin disorders, skin diseases, their symptoms, clinical manifestations, and their treatment. Dermatologists also play an important role in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. In many cases, patients' symptoms are related to other specialties, such as internal medicine, allergy, immunology, pathology (histology), microbiology (bacteriology, virology, mycology), or specialized laboratory diagnostics.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST?
Since dermatology deals with a wide range of issues not only related to the skin but also to the nails, hair, scalp, oral mucosa, and external genitalia, if you have unusual skin symptoms, if your nails hurt, if your hair is falling out, or if you notice changes in your genital area or surrounding areas that do not improve after a few days, you should definitely consult a dermatologist. Rashes, abnormal subcutaneous swellings, bullous rashes, psoriasis, rosacea, and wounds or skin irritations that are slow to heal or show no signs of healing, as well as skin inflammations, infections, skin diseases, and tumors can often appear harmless in their early stages, but timely diagnosis can significantly reduce the patient's discomfort, pain, and anxiety in aesthetic cases. HOW DOES A DERMATOLOGICAL EXAMINATION TAKE PLACE?
The dermatological consultation begins with taking the patient's medical history. Afterward, the affected skin surface will be examined; if necessary, the dermatologist will closely examine the skin and dermis using a magnifying lens or a special device equipped with a built-in light and magnifying lens, known as a dermatoscope. If necessary, additional tests may be ordered to establish an accurate diagnosis and rule out complications. These tests may include: laboratory diagnostics to rule out deficiencies and identify suspicious markers, internal medicine evaluations to rule out complications, surgery to remove skin lesions, allergy testing to identify allergens causing symptoms, immunological tests to identify immune system disorders causing symptoms, pathology (histology) for cancer screening, microbiology for diagnosing bacterial and viral infections.
